First described in 1836, as Specklinia atropurpurea. Known for their unique 'windowed' flowers resembling animal faces. Later named a genus by Carlyle A. Luer in 1982, from the Greek 'zootrophion' meaning 'a menagerie'. Comprises epiphytic species from Central and South America
